“Power Struggles & Social Dynamics in Manchuria in the Early 1900s”

The recently published Stolen Dreams – A Manchurian Legacy is a historical biography about the life of the grandfather of
the author, Julie Sormark, in Manchuria, China, from 1898 to 1940.
Julie will talk about the growth of the city of Harbin and the impact that history had on her grandfather’s business and
family, with a particular focus on how political events at the end of the last century in Russia, Japan, Korea and China
shaped the developments in Manchuria.
Julie Sormark was born in Shanghai, grew up in Japan and graduated from Sophia University in Tokyo. She has lived
and worked most of her life in the Far East, where she has been a teacher for the past 35 years, specializing in English
pronunciation, on which subject she has published numerous books.
