How to Integrate Project-Based Learning with Research and Creative Works
February 13, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, Kuykendall 106 Events Room
This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs) initiated at MÄnoa in Spring 2015 with three VIP teams now grown to thirteen teams and more than 200 students from six diverse departments across the MÄnoa campus.
The VIP program uses long-term, in-depth, project-based learning to engage students and prepare them for future careers. VIPs are a great collaborative experience for students, and also help faculty to integrate education with their own research and creative work interests. Participants will hear both student and faculty advisor perspectives.
Some features of the program include:
- Multidisciplinary teams consisting of faculty mentor(s), graduate student researchers, and undergraduates
- Students working on the same project over multiple semesters receive credits useful towards graduation requirements
- Graduate and more experienced undergraduates help mentor new students
