Constructing Post-Soviet Stardom: Auteur and the State
February 8, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, Kuykendall 409A

“Constructing Post-Soviet Stardom: Auteur and the State in the Case of Renata Litvinova.â€
As Richard Dyer's research on stars does not explain or describe the
Russian star system due to its historical and cultural difference from
Hollywood, I analyze the construction of Russian stardom and describe
its architectural principles such as the close connection of the film industry
to the state and its imperial nature, the understanding of cinema as an
art but not entertainment, and the director-centered mode of
production. These factors form a unique figure of a star director,
usually in the transition from a previous acting career. Renata
Litvinova, a leading Russian female director, presents an example of
such a transition.
Olga Mukhortova, ABD serves as an Instructor of Russian at UH-MÄnoa
and writes her dissertation on star and celebrity studies to complete
her Ph.D. degree at the University of Pittsburgh in Slavic and Film
Studies. While working for 20 years as a teacher of Russian for
non-Russian students, Olga conducts her research in the fields of
empire and post-colonial studies, women studies, and contemporary
Russian film.
