Talk by Dr. Philomene Verlaan- Tales of the Snow Leopard

February 24, 2:30pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Moore 258 Add to Calendar

Drawing on the book "Tales of the Snow Leopard," this presentation highlights the conservation initiatives of Hemis National Park, which offer an inspiring example of how traditional human and non-human populations of a national park approach living together sustainably. Told largely by Ladakhis themselves, and compiled in situ over the last three years by the speaker with her two Ladakhi co-authors, Khenrab Phuntsog and Smanla Tsering, snow leopard rangers for Hemis National Park, the Tales describe contemporary life of Ladakhis, including traditional songs and stories related to the Park, and contribute information on the natural history of snow leopards in the Park. The Tales are honored with a moving foreword by Dr. George B. Schaller, one of the most esteemed "Fathers of Conservation", and the world-renowned expert on Himalayan wildlife, especially the endangered snow leopard and its prey.
