Prime Minister Abe started 2017 with his New Year address indicating that Japan’s strategy for economic growth is once again a top priority for his administration. The real test of Abenomics has always been a fundamental structural reform of its economy with “the 4th industrial revolution†based on IoT, AI, and advanced robotics, etc. “Society 5.0†is the vision adopted by his administration last year to realize this goal through Japan’s 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan (2016-2020.)
Professor Atsushi Sunami is Vice President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan. He also serves as Special Advisor to the Cabinet Office responsible for Science and Technology and Innovation. Before joining GRIPS, he was a Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. He also worked as a policy researcher at the Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. from 1989 to 1991. He was a visiting researcher at the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, and at Tsinghua University, China. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Promotion of Science and Technology Diplomacy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Council for Science and Technology in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Expert Panel on Basic Policy of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. Professor Sunami holds a BSFS from Georgetown University and an MIA and PhD in Political Science from Columbia University.
