Imayō: Artist talk by painter KIMURA Ryōko

October 20, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, John Young Museum of Art Add to Calendar

Painter KIMURA Ryōko talks about her work in this artist talk. She is one of six artists highlighted in the exhibition "Imayō: Japan's New Traditionists" on view at The Art Gallery at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (Oct. 2 – Dec. 2, 2016) and at the Honolulu Museum of Art (Oct. 13, 2016 – Jan. 9, 2017).

KIMURA Ryōko’s paintings evoke Japan’s "ukiyo-e" (pictures of the floating world) tradition, but with a twist—the substitution of Edo-period female beauties with contemporary male models creates images that fluctuate between the erotic and the comic.
