Soviet Children in World War II, part 2

The UH Russian Studies committee is hosting a three-day workshop on campus. The second part of the workshop will be presentations on the experience of Soviet children during World War II. On the first panel, Professor Helena Goscilo (Ohio State University) will present “Visual Variations on Victimization: The Child’s Plight in WWII†and Professor Alexander Prokhorov (College of William and Mary) will present “Demilitarizing Soviet Culture: Representations of Civilians in the War Films of the 1940s and 1950s.†On the second panel, Professor Anastasia Kostetskaya (UHM) will present “Soviet Teenagers as Forced Laborers in the Third Reich†and Professor Yasha Klots (Georgia Institute of Technology) will present “The Trinity of Martyrdom and Theodicy of Language in Varlam Shalamov’s ‘Mandelshtam Cycle’.â€
