Strategically situated in the Indian Ocean, a region of rising economic prominence and potential for trade activity, Sri Lanka is gaining traction as a major “player†in the region, especially following last year’s successful elections.
His Excellency Prasad Kariyawasam, was appointed Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the U.S. in 2014. He also serves as the country’s High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Ambassador (designate) to Mexico, and Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States. He has held diplomatic posts in Geneva, Riyadh, Washington, New Delhi and New York. In his last assignment as the High Commissioner to India in Delhi he was concurrently accredited as the Ambassador to Bhutan and Afghanistan.
Ambassador Kariyawasam joined Sri Lanka’s Foreign Service in 1981 and has worked in offices of: the United Nations and Non-Aligned Movement; Political Affairs; Administration; Economic Affairs; and as the Special Assistant to the Foreign Secretary. Prior to his assignment to New York as Ambassador he held the position of Director General of the Economic Affairs Division and served as an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ambassador has held leadership positions in numerous United Nations bodies concerning human rights, migrant workers, the arms and weapons trade, and economic and social development.
