Urbanization and Urban Planning in Asia

A joint symposium sponsored by UH Manoa and Tongji University (Shanghai, China).

Participants will share their research and/ or report on the current state of urbanization and urban planning responses in Asia and the Pacific region. Scholars from the College of Architecture & Urban Planning (CAUP), Tongji University; San Francisco State University (SFSU); UHM's Dept of Urban & Regional Planning; and other departments at UHM will present their work.

A highlight of this symposium will be the presentation of research projects on urbanization and contemporary urban planning in China by visiting scholars from Tongji University, China: Min Zhao , Peng Zhenwei, Li Zhang, and Richard LeGates. Professors John Friedmann and Reginald Kwok, experts on urban planning and development policies in China, will also comment on the China research and other presentations. Presenters from UHM will talk about a range of urbanization related challenges and planning efforts – such as disaster management, transportation, use of technology, basic services, and housing – from other places in Asia and elsewhere.
