The city of San Juan de los Lagos, where a small statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is enshrined, is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Mexico. In 1623 while a family of acrobats was performing in the city, their young daughter fell upon a dagger and was fatally injured. The grief-stricken parents took her lifeless body to the chapel that contained an unimposing little statue of Our Lady, where, in faith, they prayed. Their prayers were answered and the child was returned to life. Soon the image became the focus of nationwide devotion.
