Bollywood Mondays: 'Barfi!' (2012)

February 8, 3:30pm - 6:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Marine Sciences Building (MSB) 100 Add to Calendar

'Barfi!', winner of the Filmfare Award for best picture in 2012, is a charming and quirky story of a deaf-mute young man (Ranbir Kapoor), nicknamed Barfi after the Indian sweet, who makes up for his loss of words with a mixture of spunk and sweetness. The movie is set in 1970s Darjeeling, and filmed alongside mist-covered mountains, lush tea estates, and the quaint buildings of the hill station.

Barfi spends a lot of his time pulling pranks and running from the local police inspector. Along the way, he falls for a beauty visiting from Calcutta, Shruti (Ilena D'Cruz). He also befriends a local autistic girl, Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra, now of 'Quantico' fame). And when Jhilmil goes missing, a chain of events unfold in which all three characters must balance social expectations and impossible loves, while trying to find lessons for life and even magic in the mundane.

This is the second movie in the 15th UH Bollywood film series, running on occasional Monday afternoons this spring. For a copy of the film series schedule for the semester, please see the contact information below.
