A-number (alien registration number)

The alien registration number or “A-number” is an identifying number that the Department of Homeland Security assigns to certain foreign nationals, such as those who apply for adjustment of status or who are in removal proceedings. It is a program to record every non-citizen who is within the United States. A-numbers begin with “A” and consist of up to 10 digits. The A-number is yours for life, much like a Social Security number.
