730 Seminar in SL Education: Diagnostic Assessment

This seminar spans the theory and practice of Diagnostic Language Assessment (DLA), a form of assessment that focuses on identifying learner strengths and weaknesses and applying that information to subsequent learning activity. We will distinguish DLA from other forms of language assessment and deal with key aspects of implementation, including identifying constructs, establishing diagnostic procedures, creating diagnostic instruments, and making connections to follow-up instruction and more autonomous learning activity. Students will complete an individual/small group project related to (a) instrument development and piloting or (b) the use of DLA in a language classroom or other relevant educational setting.

Prerequisites: SLS 490 or equivalent.
