680P Response to Writing

This course examines approaches to response to student writing in second language contexts. From a theoretical stance, we address the “grammar correction debate” and discuss issues around written corrective feedback. Responding to student writing involves more than just grammar correction, however, so we also address other aspects of teacher response, such as written commentary, rubric development, and face-to-face and computer-mediated writing conferences. In order to build self-regulated learners, we discuss how to structure peer- and self-editing and peer review sessions. Course activities engage participants in responding to real students’ writing and in designing a philosophy of response.
