730 Language Proficiency Frameworks in Testing and Teaching

In this course, students will examine various language proficiency frameworks and explore how they have impacted language testing and teaching. Language proficiency frameworks covered will include the Common European Language Framework of Reference (CEFR) and American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Guidelines, among others. On the methodological side, the course will introduce standard-setting procedures that are used to link tests and educational programs/materials to external frameworks. Class meetings will involve discussion of readings and examinations of tests and other materials linked to proficiency frameworks. The major assignment for the course will take the form of either (a) a systematic review of a proficiency framework (or frameworks) has been applied or (b) a proposal and pilot of a linking study that relates a test or other material to a proficiency framework.
