660 Sociolinguistics & Second Languages

This course presents a selective overview over current topics in sociolinguistics, with a focus on the sociolinguistics of multilingualism and qualitative approaches to research in this domain. Students will gain research-based knowledge of linguistic diversity and how it relates to other dimensions of diversity on larger and smaller scales of social organization. Students will also develop their ability to use discourse-based sociolinguistic approaches in their own research. Course activities include extensive reading and prepared class discussions, and a final study.
