630 Second Language Program Development

This course emphasizes common approaches to curriculum design for language programs. A particular focus will be placed on language needs analysis and the implications for language program development. We will review common methods for conducting needs analysis research, with additional considerations given to language testing for norm- and criterion-referenced purposes; choosing, adapting and creating language materials for a specific program; and evaluation at the program level for improvement and maintenance of curriculum. By the end of the semester, students will be expected to:

  • List and summarize different language education programs in the US and abroad
  • Articulate the link between curriculum objectives, course objectives, and assessment
  • Describe the stages of a needs analysis and how a needs analysis informs curriculum development
  • Conduct a small scale program development research project
