612 Alternative Approaches to Second Language Teaching

Examination, comparison with conventional approaches; interpersonal relationships in language teaching. Pre: 600.

This course aims to give students a theoretical understanding of and to have practical experiences with a variety of approaches to learning and teaching a second or a foreign language. Depending on class interest, there could be sessions on such approaches as Cooperative Language Learning, the Lexical Approach, Neurolinguistic Programming, Comprehension Approach, Total Physical Response, Critical Pedagogy/Feminist Pedagogy, CALL and technology, drama, music, content-based education, literature, and Natural Approach among others. Students (supported by the instructor) will demo approaches that they are interested in exploring.
