Colloquium (Friday, March 12) – Thomas Schmidt

A Transcendental Reading of the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā

  • The Keith Whittingslow Graduate Essay Prize Winner
  • Immanuel Kant and Nāgārjuna are probably as far from one another as is possible, both in terms of their times and places and in terms of their philosophical projects. Nevertheless, the parallels between both thinkers have inspired modern interpreters to understand the thinking of one in terms of the other. Based on two contemporary views, however, I argue that such a parallel can only be of a formal nature. I examine in this presentation the difference between phenomena and noumena in Kant and between the conventional and the ultimate in Nāgārjuna, which do not easily map onto each other.
