Similar to vacation leave, eligible full-time employees earn 21 working days or 168 hours of sick leave per calendar year, which may be accumulated and carried over from one year to the next.

Sick leave may be taken for the employee’s medical, dental, optical, and optometrical examination appointments which the employee cannot schedule for non-work time. Under the Hawai’i Family Leave Law (HFLL), sick leave may be used to care for a family member with a serious health condition if you qualify for family and medical leave.

Refer to your collective bargaining agreement for more information regarding Sick Leave.

Eligible employees may accumulate earned sick leave. The unused sick leave accumulated shall be credited to the Employee’s account for subsequent use in the event of sickness.

Such unused sick leave may be accumulated without limitation.

Employees must submit a licensed physician’s certificate for absences of five (5) or more consecutive working days (except BU07 employees –  more than five (5) consecutive working days)  to substantiate the absence was due to illness and that the employee is able to resume working.
