Description: | A portrait of the Republic of Palau, a Pacific Island nation situated three thousand miles southwest of Hawai'i, in the western Pacific. Palau has a world famous coral reef ecosystem threatened by pollution and a two thousand year-old matrilineal culture in danger of extinction. American democratic ideals were overthrown by US military policy. People are fighting for their sovereignty and control of their resources in a global corporate economy bent on short-term profit at any price. The story is told through file footage and the visions of Palauans working to bring their nation into full membership in the planetary community, with their culture and ecology intact. |
