Description: | For many years in the South Pacific, lepers were dealt a brutally simple sentence: they were cast out of their islands for the rest of their lives, banished from home and loved ones forever. Makogai in Fiji was the island to which all lepers were sent. Here the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary tended patients and provided some semblance of normalcy. This program is a touching recollection of the human suffering entailed in the curse of leprosy, focusing on Poluteli, a Tongan who lived on Makogai, and containing archival film and stills. |
