Ricardo Trimillos was voted for lifetime membership for his years of service, advocacy and academic contributions.
The champion for the study of music and dance from Hawaiʻi, Asia and the Pacific died on Saturday, July 3.
Former students are hoping to raise $80,000 within a year from Trimillos’ 80th birthday to bring a foreign scholar of ethnomusicology to UH Mānoa.
Smith was the founder of UH Mānoa’s internationally-recognized ethnomusicology program.
