The physical removal of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Maunakea is scheduled to begin by early May.
UH has determined that the proposed project will have no significant adverse environmental impacts.
The draft will be amended based on the public comments/feedback received and go to the BOR for public review.
This outreach effort will contribute to the preparation of a Cultural Impact Assessment to address proposed future UH land authorization.
UH Maunakea Rangers respond to a tour van engulfed in flames. Everyone was safely evacuated and uninjured.
Input from the public will be used to develop an Environmental Assessment draft and a Site Decommissioning Plan for the Hōkū Keʻa telescope on UH-managed lands on Maunakea.
The plan covers all operating and advisory units associated with Maunakea and will make operations and management more efficient, effective and transparent.
The current pandemic has prompted the closure of the Maunakea Visitor Information Station.
The California Institute of Technology Submillimeter Observatory and the UH Hilo Hōkū Keʻa teaching telescope are both making progress in the extensive decommissioning process, according to an update to the Board of Regents.
