MEDIA ADVISORY: Learn why it’s great to be a teacher

There is a high need for teachers in the state and the University of Hawaiʻi and Hawaiʻi State Department of Education want to show why you should consider a pathway to leading our keiki.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education, together with Leeward Community College and the Hawai‘i State Department of Education, will hold the annual It’s Great to be A Teacher event at the Leeward CC Education Building on January 25, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

The free, one-stop opportunity is open to anyone interested in becoming a teacher in Hawai‘i and features different teacher preparation programs and organizations available to help future educators along their journey.

Attendees will learn about the various pathways to becoming a teacher, discover different program options to suit their schedule and find out about scholarships and other funding opportunities. Information about being employed as a teacher, including potential salaries, will also be available. 

The event features locally recognized teachers and leaders in education who will share their insights and experiences to inspire the next generation of Hawai‘i’s educators.

Special guests include:

·         Cecilia “CC” Chung, 2020 Hawai‘i State Teacher of the Year

·         Derek Minakami, 2001 Hawaiʻi State Teacher of the Year and the first public school National Board certified teacher in Hawai‘i, currently serving as Kāne‘ohe Elementary School principal

·         Zachary Morita, 2018 Winner of the $100,000 Farmers’ Insurance Thank America’s Teachers Dream Big Teacher Challenge

·         Ululani Russo, 2020 Nānakuli-Wai‘anae Complex Area Teacher of the Year
