The Hawaiʻi State Senate honored five Hawaiian language kumu for their leadership in reviving and teaching ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi in our schools statewide.

The Hawaiʻi state Senate honored five Hawaiian language kumu (teachers) from the University of Hawaiʻi for their leadership in reviving and teaching ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (the Hawaiian language) on February 16, 2018.

The five UH faculty recognized on the Senate floor are:

  • Papaikanīʻau Kaiʻanui, Hawaiian studies instructor and program coordinator, UH Maui College
  • Larry Lindsey Kimura, associate professor of Hawaiian language and Hawaiian studies, Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikolani, UH Hilo
  • Kananinohea “Kanani” Kawaiʻaeʻa Mākaʻimoku, assistant professor, ʻUla O Keʻelikolani, UH Hilo
  • Florence Lolena Nicholas, instructor, Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language, UH Mānoa
  • Annette Ipo Wong, associate professor and director, Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language, UH Mānoa
