Kapiolani International Festival 2016

Kapiʻolani Community College stages the 28th Annual International Festival, March 14–17. The festival features guest speakers, music, dance, art, films, literature and poetry that beautifully showcase the diversity of cultures found in the world today. All events are free and open to the public.

This year’s theme is “HEROES.” International students from Korea, Japan, China and Venezuela will introduce participants to the lives and achievements of inspirational African Americans and American women as well as heros in international literature.

The international festival is sponsored by the Honda International Opportunities Fund and the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council.

Featured activities will include:

  • The Persian epic book, The Shahnameh
    Landan Hamedani will speak about Persian culture and heroes found in the Persian epic book, The Shahnameh.
  • The music and dance of Tahiti
    Guest performers from Te Vevo Tahiti no Mānoa, UH Mānoa’s Tahitian Dance Ensemble, will present songs and dances from the island of Tahiti in an exhilarating performance of expressive culture.
  • Pʻansori: Korean stories through song
    Pʻansori originated in the 17th century, in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897) and is a unique genre of musical storytelling performed by a vocalist and a drummer. Guest Artist: Sangah Lee, UH Mānoa
  • Classical Legong and Topeng dances of Bali
    Classic Balinese dance from Indonesia performed by Anna Reynolds and I Made Widana.

Every evening of the festival, Kapiʻolani CC will screen an international film in the ʻŌhiʻa Auditorium.

  • Dearest (China)
  • The Teacher’s Diary (Thailand)
  • Visa of life: Story of Senpo Sugihara (Japan)
