A statewide honor for excellence in the field of human resources (HR) has been awarded to Kapiʻolani Community College HR Specialist Hunter Kirihara. The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) Hawaiʻi HR Emerging Professional Award acknowledges a member of SHRM Hawaiʻi who exemplifies the best of the profession’s values and achievements through specific accomplishments.

With just 2.5 years in the field of HR, Kirihara has made significant contributions in improving HR processes at Kapiʻolani CC. As the deputy Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) officer and deputy American Disabilities Act (ADA) officer, he transformed the ADA accommodation process, creating a more efficient system that ensures timely support for employees.

“Hunter’s dedication to accessibility and fairness has made the processes at Kapiʻolani CC very efficient and organized.” said Darsh Davé, Kapiʻolani CC HR manager and EEO officer. “His leadership, expertise and readiness to meet complex HR challenges, exemplifies the SHRM values of lokahi (unity), kinaʻole (excellence), and kuleana (responsibility).”

Kirihara was presented the award at the SHRM Hawaiʻi State Conference in early October 2024, and also received a $500 scholarship.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by SHRM Hawaiʻi among so many outstanding leaders in the HR profession.” said Kirihara. “At Kapiʻolani CC, I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with dedicated colleagues and supportive leaders who share a passion for fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.”

Kirihara represents a new generation of HR professionals who are shaping the future of the workplace in Hawaiʻi. He recently completed his SHRM Certified Professional certification and has led important initiatives, including development and delivery of training programs on unconscious bias, emotional intelligence, disability etiquette, and conflict resolution, advancing Kapiʻolani CC’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
