Students lying in a circle looking up

This message was shared with the students, faculty and staff of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on August 26, 2024.

Aloha mai UH Mānoa students,

Welina mai kākou and welcome to the fall 2024 semester! As we gather on our beautiful campus, I’m filled with excitement for the journey that lies ahead of us.

To our returning students, welcome back! Your resilience and perseverance over the last couple of years have been truly remarkable. We are eager to see how you will build on your experiences and continue to grow this academic year.

To our incoming students, a special welcome to you as you begin your UH Mānoa journey. You’re joining a vibrant and supportive community, and we can’t wait to see the unique perspectives and talents you’ll bring to our campus.

The spirit of aloha that defines our islands has never been more evident, particularly as we’ve supported our Maui ʻohana in their ongoing recovery after last year’s wildfires. I also offer a special welcome to our first-year students from Lahainaluna High School Class of 2024. We’re proud to welcome a record number of Lunas to UH Mānoa this fall.

I strongly encourage all of you to attend the annual Welina Mānoa First Day of School Kick-Off. Unfortunately, due to weather concerns the Kick-Off has been postponed. We will keep you updated, and let you know when the event is rescheduled. Also, keep an eye out for the What’s up this week @ Mānoa weekly email that will have everything you need to know–important academic dates, campus events, opportunities and resources.

Every year, the Fall semester brings with it a renewed energy and countless possibilities. Please embrace these opportunities—engage in stimulating discussions, participate in groundbreaking research and be part of our vibrant campus life, whether catching a play at Kennedy Theatre or cheering on our football and volleyball teams.

As you embark on a new academic year, the start of your own personal journey of discovery, the faculty, staff and administration of this great university will be with you every step of the way. I can’t wait to see what we will achieve together!

Me ke aloha,
Michael Bruno
UH Mānoa Provost
