Matthew Shipley announcement

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa kicker Matthew Shipley was selected to the 30-player watch list for the 2023 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, as announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

This year marks the second consecutive year Shipley has been selected to the watch list.

Shipley is coming off his second straight season in which he converted 80% of his field goal attempts. Over the last two seasons, he made 34-of-41 field goal attempts, including 16-of-20 last year. He is also 69-of-70 in PAT attempts over the last two seasons.

The 20 semifinalists will be announced on November 9. From this list, a panel of more than 100 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches, sports information directors, media members, former Groza finalists, and current National Football League kickers selects the top three finalists for the award, announced on November 28. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced in December during the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, will recognize the finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach Countyon December 4.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
