University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa women’s tennis player Ana Vilcek earned her first Big West Player of the Week after recording a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles and in the process upsetting a pair of ranked players. On February 21, Vilcek also entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings for the first time.
Last week, on UH’s three-match road swing through southern California, Vilcek led UH to a 2-1 record, sweeping the University of California, Riverside (UCR) in the Rainbow Wahine’s Big West opener and then defeating San Diego State University. UH fell to No. 18 San Diego, 5-2.
Vilcek opened the roadtrip by shutting out UCR’s Kamya Nair, 6-0, 6-0. She followed with a hard-fought win over San Diego State’s 116th-ranked Andjela Skrobonja, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (8). Vilcek capped the week with a three-set win over University of San Diego’s 37th-ranked Solymar Colling 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
In No. 1 doubles, Vilcek and teammate Nikola Holmokova took down the Aztec pair of Rania Azziz and Alicia Melosch, 6-3. UH won the team competition, 5-2.
