Joyce Lau and Charlie Ushijima award graphic

Longtime University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa supporter Joyce Lau is the recipient of the 2023 Charlie Ushijima Award, which is presented to an outstanding volunteer for dedicated and unselfish service to UH Athletics. Lau will receive her award during halftime of the men’s basketball game on Saturday, February 11 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

Lau has been connected with UH for more than 15 years, first as an employee with UH Foundation then in 2010 when she began working for the Nā Koa Football Club.

After her retirement in 2018, Lau continued to volunteer with many of the same planning committees and events that she worked on as an employee. She has been a planning leader for men’s volleyball’s Aʻo a Koa Event, baseball’s For the Love of the Game and the inaugural Sistahhood Social.

She is also a dedicated supporter of the Men’s Basketball Booster Club, Letterwinners Club, the Murphy’s Pigskin Pigout, Nā Koa Golf Tournament, Hawaiʻi Bowl and Diamond Head Classic. She and her husband, Eddie can be seen at almost every athletics event, and she travels to support the teams on the road.

In 2004, Lau returned to school and earned her degree in psychology from UH Mānoa.
