Water polo player in the water

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa water polo alumna Irene Gonzalez helped her home country of Spain claim its first FINA Water Polo World League Championship on November 6.

Spain upended Hungary 19-18 as Gonzalez tallied three goals in the finals match to end a run by the United States of seven consecutive titles in the World League.

Gonzalez, a 2019 UH graduate, was a two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-American First Team member and the only Rainbow Wahine to claim multiple Big West Player of the Year awards.

Joining Gonzalez in the championships were two other former Rainbow Wahine, Maartje Keuning and Maxine Schaap, who both competed for their home country of the Netherlands.
