University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa women’s soccer goalkeeper Lauren Marquez was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week on September 19. The award comes after Marquez posted a shutout in a 1-0 win over UC Davis in UH’s conference opener on September 15.

The graduate student earned her second clean sheet of the season and the fifth of her career, making a pair of second-half saves to preserve the Rainbow Wahine’s victory against UC Davis. Marquez made a number of big plays in the net down the stretch, including a huge save on a UC Davis corner kick attempt with eight minutes to play and UH ahead by a goal.

Marquez currently leads the conference in goals allowed average, giving up just 0.857 goals per match over 315 minutes of action in the net. She is the only qualified Big West goalkeeper allowing fewer than one goal per match and is one of five goalies in the league with multiple shutouts this season.

It is the second straight week that a Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper has been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week. Sophie Augustin claimed the honor last week after leading UH to a win at Portland State.

This marks the first time since the Big West began honoring a Defensive Player of the Week in 2010 that a team has had two different goalies win the award in back-to-back weeks. It is also just the third time that a team has had two different goalies win the award in a season.
