U H Hilo pitcher
Cameron Scudder

A pair of left-handed pitchers—Cameron Scudder and Kyle Alcorn—are winners of this week’s University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Pepsi Athlete of the Week awards for their work on the mound against Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU) in Hilo.

Scudder was electric in his Hawaiʻi Island debut on Sunday against the Sharks. He settled in to fan 11 HPU batters in just 5.2 innings of work. He gave up one unearned run in the first inning but struck out the side in the second and third innings. He didn’t get the win or the loss, but posted the most strikeouts by a Vulcan pitcher since Travis Burleson in 2018 and Jordan Kurokawa in 2016.

Senior pitcher Alcorn was more than gritty during a series-opening 8-1 win over HPU on Saturday. He pitched seven innings (102 pitches), allowed only four hits and no earned runs, walked two and struck out three. He earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the season. Alcorn’s 1.86 ERA is tops among Vulcan starters.
