University of Hawaiʻi faculty and staff can now access the 50th anniversary edition of ebook and audiobook Historic Waiʻanae – A Place of Kings, a generous gift from author and UH Mānoa alumnus Ed McGrath and Adrian Silva, sixth-generation resident of the Waiʻanae Coast and CEO of the nonprofit foundation Hui Huliau.
Historic Waiʻanae – A Place of Kings, authored by McGrath, Kenneth Brewer and Bob Krauss, collects stories and history from family scrapbooks, interviews and State Archives and museums to weave together a living history of Waiʻanae. Illustrations, archival and personal photographs and the voices of Waiʻanae residents bring the past and present together from the times of Native Hawaiian royalty through the plantation days to the living memories of those who live there today.
“We are deeply grateful to Ed for sharing this historic work with all our faculty and staff,” said UH President David Lassner. “It provides a wonderful opportunity for all of us to appreciate and celebrate the Waiʻanae Coast and its people.”
The authors are working on an ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) version of Historic Waiʻanae – A Place of Kings for spring 2025.
