Which board-certified dermatologist in Seattle and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa alumnus has more than 2 million followers? Meet Daniel Sugai (MD ’12), a proud graduate of the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
Sugai specializes in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. When he’s not treating patients in-person, Sugai reviews skin care products, answers questions and spreads information via various social media platforms.
“I get to share the joy of how [my patients] are progressing through life. That continuity is beautiful. I really love how fulfilling my days are,” Sugai said.
He credits UH Mānoa with giving him a strong foundation.
“I had a really great experience in my four years of undergraduate education at UH,” said Sugai. “I am also grateful for receiving the Presidential Scholarship which not only covered my schooling, but also gave me a travel fund to travel to India where I had an eye-opening experience. This trip was so meaningful to me that I used my stories from this trip in my medical school and residency applications.”

When he’s not posting about dermatology, Sugai could be highlighting a favorite Hawaiʻi food establishment. Originally from Waialua on Oʻahu’s North Shore, Sugai said his local roots have shaped his ability to create relatable and meaningful content.
“I love connecting and reconnecting with Hawaiʻi people from all over the world,” said Sugai. “People who are still in Hawaiʻi or moved out of Hawaiʻi and just want a little nostalgic connection from afar through an app.”
