For the fourth straight year, the University of Hawaiʻi has been named one of the best employers in the U.S. by Forbes Magazine. UH was one of 1,294 organizations that made the Forbes Best Employers 2024 List, along with nine other Hawaiʻi employers. UH came in 8th after the City and County of Honolulu and ahead of Hawaiian Airlines and the Queen’s Health Systems. The state’s sole provider of public higher education employs more than 9,200 people statewide at 10 campuses and nine learning centers.

“The credit for this recognition goes to the many unit leaders across the system, our dedicated human resources teams and our employees themselves, all of whom create a caring environment for one another,” said UH President David Lassner. “And the opportunity to support student learning and research that matters through public higher education provides a common purpose that brings us all together and makes UH such a great place to work.”

Forbes develops the list annually with market research firm Statista, which surveyed more than 160,000 employees working for companies with at least 500 people within the U.S. The respondents were asked to evaluate employers they’d worked for within the past two years, and organizations they knew within their industry or through friends or family who worked there.

Final scores are based on personal evaluations (employees’ willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family) and public evaluations (recommendations from friends and family members of employees, or members of the public who work in the same industry).

Responses—received from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.—were tallied and incorporated into a scoring system, along with survey data from the past three years. Greater weight was given to the more recent data and to the responses from current employees within the state.
