September is National Student Parent Month, and the Student Parents at Mānoa (SPAM) program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa celebrates with activities and events to honor and support our pregnant and parenting students, while raising campus awareness of their unique experiences and contributions. The events are a collaboration with the SPAM program, Bridge To Hope, and the Women’s Center.
“Balancing academic dreams with the demands of family life is a true testament to the extraordinary dedication and tenacity of pregnant and parenting students on our campus,” said Angie Solomon, SPAM program coordinator. “By supporting their educational journey, we are also supporting their goals of economic mobility and career fulfillment. The SPAM program is committed to empowering student parents to achieve their academic and professional goals. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.”

Approximately one in five college students in the U.S. is raising a child while pursuing their academic goals. Student parents are a diverse population with a significant number identifying as women and students of color. Balancing full-time work, high childcare costs, housing instability and academic responsibilities, student parents demonstrate remarkable resilience and dedication.
