John Lindsay Richards Jr., Kapiʻolani Community College’s dean of hospitality, legal, business and technology, passed away on February 26, 2024, at the age of 69, leaving a legacy of creativity, compassion and unwavering dedication to career and technical education (CTE).

Richards held the position of dean for nine years, managing the college’s culinary arts, hospitality and tourism, paralegal, accounting, and IT programs. Prior to moving to Hawaiʻi in 2015, Richards was the director of the Miami Culinary Institute and the International Hospitality Center at Miami Dade College. His visionary leadership was evident in events such as the recent collaboration between the CTE Expo and PhotoCON Hawaiʻi, a testament to his creative spirit and commitment to providing transformative learning experiences for students.

“John Richards has been a dedicated member of our Kapiʻolani Community College ʻOhana,” said Kapiʻolani CC Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to John’s family and friends during this difficult time. The campus remembers him as a kind, compassionate and supportive leader who was always willing to listen to diverse points of view.”

Bringing people together

Culinarium, an initiative championed by Richards, offered professional development training through team-building cooking competitions and training programs for corporate and community groups. The innovative short-term training not only enhanced culinary skills but cultivated camaraderie and collaboration among participants.

“As a chef, John could hold his own among the best. Similarly, he not only cooked food with chefs, but John cooked up ideas with continuing education like Culinarium,” said Dean of Community Education and Workforce Development Carol Hoshiko.

Richards was a multifaceted individual who shared his culinary arts and music passions with the community. His production and performance of “Coolin’aire, a Culinary Jazz Odyssey,” showcased his ability to merge his love for the culinary arts and music into a captivating artistic expression.

“I will always remember John as a courageous and supportive dean who cared deeply about his team,” said Hospitality and Tourism Education Chair Laure Burke. “His unwavering support, dedication and positive attitude inspired me. Despite the challenges he faced, he never lost his optimism or his smile. It was an honor to work with him.”
