The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women’s softball team placed No. 6, and the men’s baseball team placed No. 7 in the PacWest Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Vulcan softball team is led by slick-fielding shortstop Jayda Favela, who hit .346 and had 20 stolen bases last season as a sophomore. The Vulcans head coach Aisha Sueda has five starters returning along with transfers Kiani Nakamura and Megan Yorba.
The Vulcan baseball team secures the No. 7 spot, beating out rival HPU by just one voting point. Alec Yamauchi is selected as the Third Team pick, however, the team faces the challenge of finding a replacement for five-year star Casey Yamauchi. The team is led by head coach Kallen Miyataki and boasted a 25-19 record in the previous season.
