The University of Hawaiʻi was named one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity in 2024 by Newsweek, recognizing the university’s commitment to “recruiting and advancing individuals of various ages, races, genders, sexual orientations and abilities.”

Among the list of the top 1,500 companies nationwide, UH was:

  • One of just 17 selected institutions of higher education that employs more than 5,000 workers.
  • One of 23 selected organizations listed under “education services” that employs more than 5,000 workers.
  • One of just five organizations selected in Hawaiʻi.

Newsweek rated UH 4.5 out of 5 stars.

“Companies recognize that a diverse workforce contributes significantly to organizational success,” Newsweek said in its release. “Diverse workforces cultivate creativity and innovation that stem from a mix of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds, fostering a dynamic environment where new ideas come to life.”

To create its ranking, Newsweek conducted an examination of publicly available data, interviews with human resources professionals and an anonymous online survey among a diverse group of employees at companies in the U.S. Respondents shared insights into corporate culture, working environments and other aspects of their own companies and others they were familiar with, resulting in more than 1.5 million company reviews.

In 2023, UH made Newsweek’s “America’s Greatest Workplaces 2023 for Diversity” list, scoring 4 out of 5 stars in the public administration category.
