The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is one of the world’s higher education leaders in social and environmental sustainability. According to the 2nd edition of the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings: Sustainability, UH Mānoa ranked No. 78 in the U.S. and No. 445 in the world, among more than 25,000 colleges and universities.

The rankings are based on a university’s performance across three categories:

  • Environmental impact (45%): environmental sustainability, environmental education and environmental research
  • Social impact (45%): equality, knowledge exchange, impact of education, employability and outcomes and health and wellbeing
  • Governance (10%): ethics, hiring practices, transparency, decision making and more

The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024 features 1,397 institutions across 95 countries and territories, more than double the number featured in the previous year’s pilot edition.

UH Mānoa has a long history of research, education and practice of sustainable principles, including UH Mānoa’s accreditation as an international arboretum was renewed for five more years in 2021 and UH Mānoa launched its Institute for Sustainability and Resilience in 2018.
