“Sometimes the easiest way to recognize if you are on the right path of your academic journey is to take a moment to stop and take in the sign (hōʻailona) around you. It could be a certain song that suddenly plays on the radio, or the smell of a fragrance wafting through the breeze reminding you of a certain family member who believed in you. No matter what it is, it is important that we pay attention to the signs around us.”

—Kawena Lorenzo, kuaʻana (senior peer mentor) Leeward Community College Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Center and student at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu
