The University of Hawaiʻi men’s golf team posted a program-best 54-hole score of 16-under par 836 at the Kāʻanapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Kāʻanapali Course.

Over the three-day tournament, the Rainbow Warriors set team scoring records for a single-round, 36 holes and 54 holes, while finishing in ninth place in the 20-team field. Individually, four UH golfers finished the tournament under par led by Blaze Akana’s 5-under 208, which tied for 30th place.

Garrett Takeuchi shot a final round 3-under 68 for a 4-under 209 total and a tie for 40th along with Josh Hayashida, who scrambled for a 3-over 74 in the final round. Kolbe Irei also shot 74 and finished the tournament at 1-under 212 and tied for 58th. Dane Watanabe battled back with a 1-over 72 to finish at 225 and a tie for 108th.

Four other Rainbow Warriors competed as individuals—Isaiah Kanno (214; tied-68th), James Whitworth (218; tied-85th), Tyler Ogawa (218; tied-85th) and Anson Cabello (221; tied-98th).

This was one of the first major events held in west Maui, more than two months after the devastating wildfires in Lahaina. The tournament held fundraising efforts for those impacted by the fires, and also held a free golf clinic for Valley Isle keiki.

UH wraps up the fall season by hosting the inaugural Kapolei Invitational in west Oʻahu. The 19-team tournament runs from October 31 through November 2 at the Kapolei Golf Club.
