Phoebe Barnes and Christian Souza

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo goalkeepers for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams were each named PacWest Defender of the Week. Both teams posted a home victory over Biola on October 16.

The Wahine Vulcans remain unbeaten with a 2-0 win in the only shutout of the week. Phoebe Barnes helped provide the blank sheet, directing the defense and saving four Eagle shots that were on goal.

Barnes has a 0.46 goals against average on the season and 21 total saves. She has a 9-0-1 record in the goal and. Barnes was picked as the PacWest Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

Souza played all 90 minutes in goal and had six saves during the men’s match. That helped the Vulcans improve to 6-5 overall and to 3-2 in the PacWest Conference. Souza, a fourth-year Vulcan, has a 1.33 goals against average and has 51 saves on the season. The Hawaiʻi native has a 5-4 record in the goal.

Both Vulcan teams will meet the Westmont Warriors on October 19 and Point Loma Sea Lions on October 21 at the Vulcan Soccer Field.
