Orchid under a microscope

This week’s UH News Image of the Week is from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Nate Kingsley, seed lab manager at the Lyon Arboretum.

Kingsley shared: “Z-stacked, microscopy image of Peristylus holochila—the rarest of Hawaiʻi‘s three endemic orchids. We were stunned when we were imaging this seed. It’s so small, to the naked eye it looks like a particle of dust! It’s definitely the smallest seed we have in our 550+ species collection—we’re talking micrometers.”
