University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa senior setter Jakob Thelle capped off a decorated career by becoming the first student-athlete in school history to be named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America first team.
The Tonsberg, Norway native also earned first team honors last season in the men’s at-large category. He is the fourth UH student-athlete all-time to earn multiple Academic All-America certificates but the first to do so on the first team.
Thelle and Theocharidis both earned First Team Academic All-America and AVCA Player of the Year awards in the same season. In 2003, Theocharidis was also selected as the Men’s At-Large All-America of the Year.
Thelle, a graduate student with a 4.0 GPA in urban and regional planning, was the only men’s volleyball player listed on the 17-member first team. He is the fifth player in program history to be named an Academic All-American.
The at-large category consists of a number of sports including men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, golf, tennis, swimming and diving and water polo among others.
