Mandolin Nguyen and Mario Surkovic

A pair of University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa swimmers swept Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) weekly honors—Mandolin Nguyen earned female athlete of the week recognition and Mario Surkovic was named male athlete of the week following their performances in the dual meet with Texas Christian University on January 13.

Nguyen helped lead the way in the Rainbow Wahine’s dominant 181.5-80.5 victory over the Horned Frogs, claiming victories in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM while also swimming the breaststroke leg for the 200 IM team that finished in first place. She clocked a time of 2:15.99 in the 200 breast and came home in 2:04.86 in the 200 IM while also finishing second by .01 seconds in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:02.98.

Surkovic was key in the Rainbow Warriors’ victories—winning the 100 and 200 free and the 200 IM. He also swam the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay, helping UH to a win with a time of 1:30.30. Surkovic pulled away in the 100 free with a mark of 44.55 to win by over a second, while clocking a 1:38.55 in the 200 free and a 1:51.66 in the 200 IM.

UH swimmers have now claimed MPSF male or female athlete of the week honors four times this year.
