The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women’s soccer team claimed a 3-0 win over Fresno Pacific University in Pacific West Conference action at home on October 15. The Vulcans surged for three scores in the span of seven minutes in the second half to capture the win. Following the win, UH Hilo remained ranked No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Rankings, released on October 18.
Filippa Graneld got the scoring started shortly after halftime with a launch at the top-right nook of the goal from 86 feet out to put UH Hilo on the scoreboard in the 49th minute.
A few minutes later, the Vulcans were able to get behind the Fresno Pacific defenders thanks to a long ball from Jodi Lillie and some nifty passing as Daelenn Tokunaga found Grace VerHage through the seam for a 40-foot score.
To cap off the scoring burst, Graneld took the ball deep one-on-one with a Fresno Pacific defender before crossing it back for Alyssa Padron to knock in the shot from the top of the penalty area.
The Vulcans notched eight shots in each half to hold a 16-5 advantage over Fresno Pacific.
Goalkeeper Lolo Retsky had one save in goal to notch her fifth complete shutout of the season.
Verhage’s fourth score in PacWest play led to a tie at No.1 in goals and points among all conference scorers. She shares the top of the conference with Graneld, who has two game-winning goals.
With this game, UH Hilo improved to 9-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in PacWest play.
